Crete: plan a longer stay

This is not a day-trip from Athens. It is the largest Greek island — mountains, a long north-coast road, and south-coast pockets that repay a car or a slow bus.

What it is for

• One-island holidays instead of four rushed ports.
• Split bases (e.g. Chania and Heraklion areas) if you accept transfer time.
• Archaeology (Knossos is the famous name; it is not the whole island).

Air and sea

Airports: HER (Heraklion) and CHQ (Chania). See getting here. Ferries from Piraeus run to Cretan ports — check operator (Blue Star / Attica Group are the names you will see most; still verify the ship).

KTEL on the island is useful along the north coast. Regional booking examples exist (e.g. e-ktel.com for Chania–Rethymno). I will not invent a Chania–Heraklion duration.
